# sk97708 - Non-local RADIUS users cannot authenticate on Gaia OS, unless they are added to Gaia database as local users

## Symptoms

- * Non-local RADIUS users cannot authenticate on Gaia OS, unless they are added to Gaia database as local users.

* */var/log/secure* file shows:

  ```
  
  sshd[PID]: radius, NAS-IP not found
  sshd[PID]: pam_radius_auth: Got response from RADIUS server
  sshd[PID]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=myhost.mydomain.org user=myuser
  sshd[PID]: error: PAM: Authentication failure for illegal user myuser from myhost.mydomain.org
  sshd[PID]: Failed keyboard-interactive/pam for invalid user myuser from <IP_Address> port <Port> ssh2
  ```

## Cause

RADIUS role name contains ':' character (e.g., "radius-group:123/456/789").

Gaia OS does not support ':' or '\\' in the RADIUS role name, in usernames, in domain names (the ':' character is used as a separator in Gaia Database).
