## Symptoms

- Loss of connectivity on Gaia machine after enabling "Ping" option on the only existing (default) route in Gaia Portal ('`Network Management`' pane - '`IPv4 Static Routes`' - select the only existing (default) route - click on '`Edit`' button - check the box '`Ping`' - click on '`Save`' button).

## Cause

As stated in the *Gaia Administration Guide* ([R75.40](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/documentation_download?id=13241), [R75.40VS](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/documentation_download?id=16244), [R76](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/documentation_download?id=22928), [R77](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/documentation_download?id=24828)) - Chapter 5 'Network Management' - 'IPv4 Static Routes' - 'Configuring IPv4 Static Routes - WebUI':
> \[Selecting\] Ping \[will\] send periodic ICMP packets to the route destination. This action makes sure that the connection is alive. If no answer is returned, the route is deleted from the routing table.

Enabling the "Ping" option on the only existing (default) route without having additional default routes may result in the loss of all routing on the Gaia machine. In addition, refer to [sk72201 - RouteD daemon is down unless default route is configured on Gaia OS](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/solutions?id=sk72201).

## Solution

### Do not turn on the "Ping" option if only one (default) route exists on your Gaia machine as this can cause intermittent or prolonged traffic loss.

When enabling the "Ping" option in Gaia Portal, care should be taken in verifying that there are additional routes available on Gaia machine for each network, for which this option is enabled.

If there are no additional routes available, it is recommended that Gaia administrators disable the "Ping" option for that route.
