## Solution

**Note: This article is no longer relevant for R80.20. Starting from R80.20 there is no 32bit at kernel level anymore, only 64bit.**

*** ** * ** ***

### To check the current kernel edition, run in Clish:

**`HostName:0> show version all`**
> *Example output* :
>
> ```
> Product version Check Point Gaia R77.20
> OS build 124
> OS kernel version 2.6.18-92cp
> OS edition 32-bit
> ```

### To set the kernel edition from 32-bit to 64-bit, run in Clish:

![](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/sc/images/caution_warning_sign_sticker.jpg) - **The following procedure includes inevitable downtime (reboot step)**

* In Gaia R76 and higher:

  ```
  HostName:0> set edition 64-bit
  HostName:0> save config
  HostName:0> reboot
  ```

* In Gaia R75.4x:

  ```
  HostName:0> set edition default 64-bit
  HostName:0> save config
  HostName:0> reboot
  ```

After the system reboots, verify that kernel edition was changed:

**`HostName:0> show version all`**
> *Example output* :
>
> ```
> Product version Check Point Gaia R77.20
> OS build 124
> OS kernel version 2.6.18-92cpx86_64
> OS edition 64-bit
> ```

**For R80.10:** Refer to the "CONNECTIVITY UPGRADE R77.X AND R80.X VERSIONS Best Practices" ([sk107042](https://supportcenter.checkpoint.com/supportcenter/portal?eventSubmit_doGoviewsolutiondetails=&solutionid=sk107042)):

* In R77.30 and below: All member gateway must run the same 32-bit or 64-bit kernel edition.
* In R80.10: Connectivity Upgrade between member gateways with different kernel editions (32/64-bit) is supported.

**For VSX:**

If you enable 64bit on OS level on VSX, all virtual systems are still running in 32bit mode.

You have to enable this with **vs_bits 64**.

**Note:** The *fwk* processes are still running in 32bit, but the OS is running in 64bit. *Vs_bits* changes the *fwk* processes from 32bit to 64bit. Refer to the "Configuring 64-Bit Virtual System Support" section in the [Check Point VSX R80.10 Administration Guide](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/R80.10/WebAdminGuides/EN/CP_R80.10_VSX_AdminGuide/html_frameset.htm)
