# sk93541 - What mode is my Gaia OS using - 64-bit or 32-bit ?

## Solution

### Gaia Versions and Kernel Modes

(1) Starting in the R80.40 version, the Gaia OS has only the 64-bit kernel. See [sk160736](https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk160736).

(2) The R80.30 version was released in two flavors:

* R80.30 kernel 3.10 that runs the 64-bit kernel. See [sk152652](https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk152652).
* R80.30 kernel 2.6 that runs the the 32-bit kernel. See [sk144293](https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk144293).

(2) The R80.20 version was released in two flavors:

* R80.20 kernel 3.10 that runs the 64-bit kernel in Security Gateways installed in a Cloud and on Open Servers. See [sk141173](https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk141173).
* R80.20 kernel 2.6 that runs the the 32-bit kernel. See [sk122485](https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk122485).

(3) The R80.20 and R80.10 versions boot by default with the 64-bit kernel in the Standalone and Management Server configuration.

(4) Versions R77.30 and lower are installed with the 32-bit kernel by default.

(5) To run with the 64-bit kernel, Gaia OS requires a minimum RAM. See the Release Notes document for your version to see the exact requirements.

### Viewing the Gaia OS Kernel Mode

To see the kernel mode, run one of these commands:

* In Gaia Clish: `show version os kernel`
* In the Expert mode: `uname -m`

If the output contains the string "`x86_64`", then this Gais OS runs the 64-bit kernel.

If the output contains the string "`i686`", then this Gais OS runs the 32-bit kernel.
