## Symptoms

- * After setting Gaia kernel edition to 64-bit on VMWare Virtual Machine and rebooting, kernel edition remains 32-bit.

* Configuring VM Guest OS to RHEL5 64-bit before the Gaia OS installation does not make any difference.

## Cause

During Gaia OS installation onto Virtual Machine, the 64-bit kernel RPM (x86_64) is not installed. As a result, setting Gaia kernel edition to 64-bit fails.

## Solution

**Important: Starting from R80.20 there is no 32bit at kernel level anymore, only 64bit.**

Follow these steps:

1. When creating a new Virtual Machine, set the Guest OS to:

   * Guest operating system: **`Linux`**

   * Version: **`Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 64-bit`**

2. Complete the Gaia OS installation.

3. Reboot the Virtual Machine.

4. Install the 64-bit kernel RPM (x86_64) manually from CD/DVD:

   1. Go to Expert mode:

      **`HostName> expert`**

   2. In the Virtual Machine settings:

      * Verify that the CD/DVD device is set to '`Connected`'.

      * Verify that the correct ISO image file is chosen.

3. Mount the CD/DVD device:

      **`[Expert@HostName]# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/`**

      The following message should appear:
      `mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only`

   4. Go to the directory with all the RPMs:

      **`[Expert@HostName]# cd /mnt/system/upg_all/RPMS/`**

   5. Check that the 64-bit kernel RPM (x86_64) is present:

      **`[Expert@HostName]# ls -l kernel_x86_64-2.6.18-92cp*.rpm`**

   6. Install the 64-bit kernel RPM (x86_64):

      **`[Expert@HostName]# rpm -ihv --force kernel_x86_64-2.6.18-92cp*.rpm`**

5. Verify that the 64-bit kernel RPM (x86_64) was installed:

   **`[Expert@HostName]# rpm -qa | grep kernel_x86_64`**

6. Reboot the Virtual Machine.

7. Set the kernel edition to 64-bit in Clish:

   * In R75.40-R75.47 versions:
     **`HostName> set edition default 64-bit`**

   * In R76 and above:
     **`HostName> set edition 64-bit`**

8. Save the configuration:

   **`HostName> save config`**

9. Reboot the Virtual Machine.

10. Check that the machine loaded the 64-bit Linux kernel in one of these ways:

    * In Gaia Portal:

      **`System Overview`** pane - **`Edition`**

    * In Clish:

      **`HostName> show version os edition`**

    * In Expert mode:

      **`[Expert@HostName]# uname -a`**
