# sk92529 - MDS restore fails with errors

## Symptoms

- MDS restore fails with the following errors:  

* ./gtar: mds_backup_opt.tgz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
* ./gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
* ./gtar: Child returned status 2
* ./gtar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
* mds_restore\> Failed to restore the static information of the MDS
* mds_restore\> Failed to restore the variable information of the MDS
* ./gtar: mds_backup_varopt.tgz: Cannot open: No such file or directory

## Cause

1) An incomplete backup file was used to restore the MDS configuration. The MDS backup file is missing the *daymonthyear-xxxx.mdsbk.tgz* file which is core for the CMAs database files:

*-CPSmasrtLog-R75.40_opt.tgz* (for platforms with SmartLog)  
*-mds_backup_opt.tgz* (required*)*   
*-mds_backup_opt_compkgs.tgz*   
*-mds_backup_supkgs.tgz*   
*-mds_backup_var_compkgs.tgz*   
*-mds_backup_varopt.tgz*(required)

2) User is trying to restore a System Backup (aka CPBackup) file created by automatic backup via mds_restore script.
