# sk87460 - Endpoint Security On Demand Compliance Scanner (ESOD CS) Windows 8 and above support

## Solution

ESOD Compliance Scanner support for Windows 8 is divided into 2 parts:

1. **Partial support** , delivered via ESOD update 100.1.87.0. Update released on Nov 14 2012.

   Limitations:
   * Client identifies Windows 8 as Vista / Windows 7.
   * JRE 6 or newer is mandatory for ESOD to function.
   * Java applets can only run in the Desktop screen of Windows 8. The Start screen (metro mode) in Windows 8 does not support the Java Plug-in that is needed to run Java applets.
   * Many vendors are not detected on Windows 8 platform.

2. **Full support** . ESOD with Windows 8 support was released in June, 2013. The version of the update is: 100.1.94.0.  

   Full support still retains some limitations:  

   * Windows 8 / Vista / Win 7 cannot be distinguished
   * ESOD scan is available only in Desktop mode

3. The **separate detection of Windows Vista/7/8/8.1** as well as **better support of Windows 10** have been implemented in the update 100.1.151.0 released in March 2019. This update provides the extended information about OS version and handles scan parameters built from the policy configured with the updated policy editor. To exploit this detection, two more components have to be updated. They are:  

   * ESOD configuration editor, implemented in scan_cfg.ocx, version 1.9.800.6 released on Aug 19, 2019. It is a SmartConsole component. ESOD policy has to be configured with the updated editor. If any �Custom� or �Windows Security� rule is not reconfigured, the feature of separate detection of Windows Vista/7/8/8.1 won�t be applied.
   * Gateway library libgwlib.so, responsible for building scan parameters and processing scan results.
