# sk74580 - "/var/log/messages" files on Security Gateway repeatedly show - "stopping debug messages for the next X seconds" and "lost Y debug messages"

## Symptoms

- The `/var/log/messages` files on a Security Gateway repeatedly show:

`FW-1: stopping debug messages for the next `*X*` seconds`  

FW-1: lost *Y* debug messages

## Cause

These messages are printed when:

1. The debugging buffer was not allocated with the "`fw ctl debug -buf <SIZE>`" command (and is set to the default 50 kilobytes).

2. The number of debug messages exceeds the limits determined by the values of the kernel parameter "`fw_kdprintf_limit`" and "`fw_kdprintf_limit_time`".

   "`fw_kdprintf_limit`" specifies how many kernel debug messages (default - 30 ; zero - disables the limit) can be printed during each "`fw_kdprintf_limit_time`" seconds (default - 60 ; zero - disables the limit).
