## Symptoms

- * SmartView Tracker shows the following alert logs from Application Control \& URL Filtering blade for relevant HTTPS sites (depending on the Fail Mode configuration):

  * `"Internal System Error, allowing request (as configured in engine settings) See sk64162 for more information."`
  * `"Internal System Error, blocking request (as configured in engine settings) See sk64162 for more information."`

* Connections are blocked, or categorization is bypassed according to 'Fail Mode' configuration:

  Application \& URL Filtering Engine Settings in '`Application & URL Filtering`' tab -\> '`Advanced`' -\> '`Engine Settings`' are:

  * In the '`Fail Mode`' section - either '`Block all requests (Fail-close)`' or 'Fail-open' option is selected
  * In the '`URL Filtering`' section - selected the '`Categorize HTTPS sites`' option

## Cause

An error caused by internal state prevents categorization of the resource referenced in the connection. Decision regarding enforcement of this connection depends on the 'Fail Mode' configuration.

## Solution

This article describes different scenarios when URL Filtering blocks HTTPS traffic with the "***Internal System Error occurred, blocking request (as configured in engine settings). See SK64162 for more information***" message in SmartView Tracker.

Each Scenario has additional details, mostly received from debug, its own cause and solution.

Note: This size is derived from the general fw connection table size. <br /> <br /> **Cause** : When a connection is created, it is written both in the connections kernel table (id 8158) and the *appi_connections* kernel table (id 55). In some cases, when only URL Filtering is enabled, the connection may not be cleared from the *appi_connection* kernel table causing the table to reach the limit. When the limit is reached, new connections are not be marked for inspection and an engine failure is declared. | [Check Point R77.10](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/solutions?id=sk97617) |

Scenarios with available Hotfixes {#Other}
------------------------------------------

[Contact Check Point Support](https://www.checkpoint.com/support-services/contact-support/) to get a Hotfix for the issues listed below.
A Support Engineer will make sure the Hotfix is compatible with your environment before providing the Hotfix.
For faster resolution and verification, collect [CPinfo](https://supportcenter.checkpoint.com/supportcenter/portal?eventSubmit_doGoviewsolutiondetails=&solutionid=sk92739) files from the Security Management and Security Gateways involved in the case.
Show / Hide Hotfix installation instructions
Install a Hotfix on the **Security Gateway**.
**Note:** In a cluster environment, do this procedure on *all* members of the cluster.

1. Transfer the hotfix package to the Security Gateway (into some directory, for example, */some_path_to_fix/*).
2. Unpack the hotfix package:

   ```
   [Expert@HostName]# cd /some_path_to_fix/
   [Expert@HostName]# tar -zxvf fw1_wrapper_HOTFIX_NAME.tgz
   ```

3. Install the hotfix:

   ```
   [Expert@HostName]# ./fw1_wrapper_HOTFIX_NAME
   ```

   **Note:** The script stops all Check Point services (*cpstop* ). Read the output on the screen.

4. Reboot the Security Gateway.

### Scenario 1: HTTP/HTTPS Traffic passing through 3rd party proxy is dropped with an "Internal System Error" {#1}

> **Symptoms**:
>
> * HTTP/HTTPS Traffic that passes through a third-party proxy (before the firewall) is dropped with "*Internal System Error*".
>
> * WS module debug shows:
>
>   ```
>   {session} ... ws_http_session_get_header_value: got header:X-Forwarded-For len:7 value:unknown;
>   {session} ... ws_http_session_get_x_forwarded_ip_from_string: x-forwarded-for header value:  (len=7): unknown;
>   {session} ... ws_http_session_get_x_forwarded_ip_from_string: [ERROR]: x-forwarded-for header with 'unknown' value found, cannot convert to IP.;
>   {session} ... ws_http_session_ext_log_header_save: [ERROR]: ws_http_session_get_x_forwarded_ip_from_string() failed;
>   {session} ... ws_http_session_ext_log_header_get_ex: [ERROR]: ws_http_session_ext_log_header_save() failed;
>   {module} ... ws_module_get_session_attribs: [ERROR]: failed to get forwarded ip;
>   {module} ... ws_module_get_attribs: [ERROR]: ws_module_get_session_attribs() failed
>
>   ```
>
> **Known Limitation:**02335915
>
> **Cause** : Identity Awareness and Application control blades are enabled on the Security Gateway and the option **Detect users located behind http proxy using X Forwarded-For header** is enabled. The `X-Forwarded-For (XFF)` header in the HTTP flow contains the value 'unknown'. As the Security Gateway is unable to parse the 'unknown' value as IP, the traffic is dropped.

### Scenario 2: Random issues with HTTP web browsing. Traffic latency increases, and at some point web browsing stops working {#2}

> **Symptoms**:
>
> * SmartView Tracker shows multiple logs "*Internal System Error occurred*" for all HTTP traffic.
> * Restarting the RAD daemon (with '`rad_admin stop ; sleep 5 ; rad_admin start`' commands) resolves the issue until it occurs again.
>
> * Debug of the RAD daemon ('`rad_admin rad debug on all all`') during the issue shows (in *$FWDIR/log/rad.elg\**):
>
>   *
>
>     ```
>     [rad_repository_container_data.h:XXX] CRadRepositoryContaineData::get: [INFO] enter to ...
>     [rad_repository_container_data.h:XXX] CRadRepositoryContaineData::get: [MISC] list: <CRadValueUInt> free objects = 0, used XXX of XXX
> [rad_repository_container_data.h:XXX] CRadRepositoryContaineData::get: [ERROR] container <CRadValueUInt> is on its maximum capacity
>     [rad_repository_container_data.h:XXX] CRadRepositoryContaineData::get: [INFO] exit from ..

### Scenario 3: "Internal System Error occurred" log for IDN HTTPS websites with HTTPS Categorization enabled {#3}

> **Symptoms**:
>
> * "*Internal System Error occurred*" log in SmartDashboard while the client is trying to reach HTTPS websites with internationalized domain name (the name contain non-English characters)
> * Categorize HTTPS sites is **enabled** *(* SmartDashboard \> Application Control \& URL Filtering \> Advanced \> Engine Settings*)*
>
> * HTTPS Inspection is **disabled** *(* Security Gateway \> Properties \> HTTPS Inspection*)*
>
> **Known Limitation:**02525513
>
> **Cause** : The certificate Name (CN) of the certificate of the HTTPS site contains non-English characters. When the client is trying to reach the website with internationalized domain name (IDN), browsers converts the URL to a [Punycode](https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3492) with prefix of "xn--",
>
> *(e.g. **IDN:** ????.?? = **Punycode:** xn--f1ae4a2b.xn--p1ai).*
>
> Most of the HTTPS websites with such behavior provide the HTTPS certificate with the original URL in the CN (and not Punycode). HTTPS Categorization is not able to verify and categorize website if the CN contains non-English characters.

### Scenario 4: HTTPS Inspection fails occasionally with "Internal System Error occurred" log from URL Filtering blade {#4}

> **Symptoms**:
>
> * HTTPS Inspection fails occasionally and an `Internal System Error occurred` log is generated by the URL Filtering blade.
> * After enabling generation of core dump files per [sk92764](https://supportcenter.checkpoint.com/supportcenter/portal?eventSubmit_doGoviewsolutiondetails=&solutionid=sk92764) / [sk53363](https://supportcenter.checkpoint.com/supportcenter/portal?eventSubmit_doGoviewsolutiondetails=&solutionid=sk53363), core dump files for the *WSTLSD* process are generated in the */var/log/dump/usermode/* directory.

Configuration Issues {#Configuration Issues}
--------------------------------------------

### Scenario 5: URL Filtering blade does not work as expected on VSX Gateway {#5}

> **Symptoms**:
>
> * URL Filtering blade does not work as expected on a VSX Gateway. URL categories are not blocked as configured in the policy.
> * Random traffic is blocked by the URL Filtering blade with the following log: `Internal System Error occurred, allowing request (as configured in engine settings). See SK64162 for more information`
> * Connectivity tests based on [sk83520](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/solutions?id=sk83520) from VSX Gateway to Check Point servers fail.
>
> **Cause:**VSX Gateway (context of VS0) is not configured to reach the Internet.
> **Show / Hide the Solution**
> **Solution:**
>
> When configuring Virtual Systems to use the Application Control and URL Filtering Software Blades, you *must* configure the VSX Gateway to connect to the Application and URL Filtering Database. Make sure that the VSX Gateway (context of VS0) can connect to the Internet, because communication for updates and URL categories is only done from this Virtual System.
>
> Refer to *VSX Administration Guide* ([R77](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/documentation_download?id=24802), [R80.10](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/R80.10/WebAdminGuides/EN/CP_R80.10_VSX_AdminGuide/130610.htm "Using Application & URL Filtering with VSX"), [R80.20](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/R80.20_GA/WebAdminGuides/EN/CP_R80.20_VSX_AdminGuide/130610.htm "Using Application & URL Filtering with VSX"), [R80.30](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/R80.30/WebAdminGuides/EN/CP_R80.30_VSX_AdminGuide/130610.htm "Using Application & URL Filtering with VSX"), [R80.40](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/R80.40/WebAdminGuides/EN/CP_R80.40_VSX_AdminGuide/Content/Topics-VSXG/Configuring-Application-Control-or-URL-Filtering-on-VSX.htm "Using Application & URL Filtering with VSX"), [R81](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/R81/WebAdminGuides/EN/CP_R81_VSX_AdminGuide/Topics-VSXG/Configuring-Application-Control-or-URL-Filtering-on-VSX.htm "Using Application & URL Filtering with VSX")) - Chapter 3 'Configuring VSX' - Using Application and URL Filtering with VSX.

### Scenario 6: Custom application traffic over HTTPS is dropped by the Application Control blade {#6}

> **Symptoms**:
>
> * With the HTTPS inspection blade disabled, custom application traffic is dropped with an error in the `fw ctl zdebug drop` debug output:
>
>   `fw_log_drop_ex: Packet proto=6 S.S.S.S:60768 -> D.D.D.D:443 dropped by fwpslglue_chain Reason: PSL Reject: ASPII_MT;`
> * The `fw ctl debug -m APPI all` kernel debug shows:
>
>   `appi_rad_uf_cmi_handler_match_signature: ssl version not supported;`
> ` appi_rad_uf_cmi_handler_match_signature: handling unsupported ssl version as fail close: dropping connection;`
>   ` appi_rad_uf_cmi_handler_match_cb: cmi action is not accept=3; appi_rad_uf_cmi_handler_match_cb: ended; `
>
> * HTTPS (443) sites and servers are not accessible. In SmartDashboard, **Application \& URL Filtering** tab \> **Advanced** \> **Engine Settings** is configured as "Fail-Close". The Block log shows `Internal System Error occurred, blocking request (as configured in engine settings)`.
>
> <!-- -->
>
> * When **Categorize HTTPS sites** is disabled, traffic passes as expected.
>
> **Cause:**This custom application uses a non-RFC HTTPS implementation.
> **Show / Hide the Solution**
> **Solution:** To allow the non-RFC HTTPS traffic, set the value of the kernel parameter `appi_rad_uf_unsupported_ssl_ver_do_drop_conn` to 0 (zero). In such case, Security Gateway handles connections with unsupported SSL version as "Fail-Open".
>
> **Note:** In a cluster environment, do this procedure on *all* cluster members.
>
> * To check the current value of this kernel parameter, run:
>
>   **[Expert@HostName]# fw ctl get int appi_rad_uf_unsupported_ssl_ver_do_drop_conn**
> * To disable this kernel parameter *on-the-fly* (the setting does not survive reboot), run:
>
>   **`[Expert@HostName]# fw ctl set int appi_rad_uf_unsupported_ssl_ver_do_drop_conn 0`**
> * To disable this kernel parameter *permanently*:
>
> Follow [sk26202 - Changing the kernel global parameters for Check Point Security Gateway](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/solutions?id=sk26202).
> > For the Gaia OS (or SecurePlatform):
> > 1. Create the `$FWDIR/boot/modules/fwkern.conf` file (if it does not exist):
>   >
>   >    **[Expert@HostName]# touch $FWDIR/boot/modules/fwkern.conf**
> > 2. Edit the `$FWDIR/boot/modules/fwkern.conf` file in the Vi editor:
>   >
>   >    **[Expert@HostName]# vi $FWDIR/boot/modules/fwkern.conf**
> > 3. Add the following line (spaces and comments are not allowed):
>   >
>   >    **`appi_rad_uf_unsupported_ssl_ver_do_drop_conn=0`**
> > 4. Save the changes and exit the Vi editor.
>   >
> > 5. Check the contents of the *$FWDIR/boot/modules/fwkern.conf* file:
>   >
>   >    **[Expert@HostName]# cat $FWDIR/boot/modules/fwkern.conf**
>   > 6. Reboot the Security Gateway.
>   >
> > 7. Verify that the new value was set:
>   >
>   >    **[Expert@HostName]# fw ctl get int appi_rad_uf_unsupported_ssl_ver_do_drop_conn**
