# sk41798 - Bringing an interface down/up with 'ifconfig IF_NAME down/up' commands on VSX Gateway

## Symptoms

- User needs to shut down an interface on VSX Gateway.   
User brings an interface down with '`ifconfig `*IF_NAME*` down`' command.  
Then the user brings that interface up with '`ifconfig `*IF_NAME*` up`' command.  
Routes associated with that interface might be lost.

## Cause

In a VSX environment, all the configuration (interfaces, routes, etc) is sent from the Management Server, and any change in a route or an interface should only be made in the SmartDashboard.

When the user brings an interface down with '`ifconfig `*IF_NAME*` down`' command and brings it up with '`ifconfig `*IF_NAME*` up`' command, the module 'pulls' only the delta changes from the Management Server.

Routes associated with that interface are obviously not a part of these changes, hence the routes do not come back up. When an interface really fails it would still be considered as 'RUNNING', so the routes will not be affected.
