## Solution

**Notes:**

* This article applies **only** to Site-to-Site VPN.  
  (this article does **not** apply to Remote Access VPN.)
* Advanced Diffie-Hellman groups (defined by RFC 3526 and RFC 5114) are supported by default. You can enable Groups 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 24 only manually (refer to the "Procedure" session).

### Background

Diffie-Hellman is a protocol for creating a shared secret between two sides of a communication (IKE, TLS, SSH, and some others).

First, both sides agree on a "group" (in the mathematical sense), usually a multiplicative group modulo a prime.

* [RFC5903](https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5903.txt) defines additional DH groups, numbered from 19 to 21.
* [RFC 5114](https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5114#section-2.3) defines additional DH groups, numbered from 22 to 24.

**Important Note:** The elliptic curve Diffie-Hellman groups (numbered 19, 20, and 21) provide better performance than any of the groups described here. Additionally, the groups described in RFC 5114 (including Group 24, described below) are **NOT RECOMMENDED** for use. The instructions in this article are only for completeness of information.

In versions R82 and higher, Diffie-Helman groups 1, 2, 5, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 are supported by default.

In older versions, you can add support for Diffie-Hellman groups with the GuiDBedit tool.  

**Procedure**

Follow these steps to add Diffie-Hellman groups 15, 16, 17, 18, and 24 for Site-to-Site VPN to the management database:

1. Connect with [the Database Tool](https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk13009) (GuiDBedit tool) to the Security Management Server / Domain Management Server.

2. In the top left pane, go to ***Table*** \> ***VPN*** \> ***encryption***.

3. In the top-right pane, right-click the empty space, then click ***New***.

4. In the **Create Object** window:

   1. In the ***Class:*** field, select **`IKE_Diffie_Hellman_parameters_object`**.

   2. In the ***Object:*** field, enter the name of the desired Diffie-Hellman Group:

5. In the upper right pane, click on the newly added Diffie-Hellman Group object.

6. In the lower pane:

   1. Right-click the ***DH_group_number***.

   2. Select ***Edit***.

   3. Enter the relevant Diffie-Hellman Group Number.

   4. Click ***OK***.

14. Save the changes: From the **File** menu, click **Save All**.

15. Close the Database Tool (GuiDBedit Tool).

16. Connect to the Security Management Server/Domain Management Server with the use of SmartConsole.

17. Install the policy on the relevant Security Gateway/Cluster object.

18. The new Diffie-Hellman Group is now available in SmartConsole / SmartDashboard.

### Notes

* In TLS communication, Check Point software does not support MODP groups at all (for better security).
