# sk185123 - FDE Upgrade to E89.25 or later Fails Due to Boot Mode / Firmware Compatibility (Boot Mode Report Tool)

## Symptoms

- * Upgrade of Full Disk Encryption to version **`E89.25 or later`** fails.
* Full Disk Encryption cannot be enabled because the firmware does not start the Check Point pre-boot environment.

## Cause

Starting with version **E89.25** , Full Disk Encryption requires devices to use a **standard UEFI boot configuration**.

FDE supports two boot modes:

* **BCDBOOT** -- Required and supported
* **BOOTMGFW** -- Legacy mode that may indicate firmware limitations. Upgrade will be blocked.

Devices running incompatible boot mode or firmware cannot complete the upgrade.
