# sk185065 - Gaia reports doubled fan RPM on 3600/3600T/3800 Check Point Firewall Appliances

## Symptoms

- * Gaia Operating System (Gaia) system environment shows fan speeds above the maximum threshold. Administrators observe an apparent over?reading
* No physical indication of abnormal fan behavior such as: unusual fan noise, overheating or thermal alerts.
* Appliance operates normally. The issue is cosmetic.

## Cause

The system measures fan speed by counting small electrical signals sent by the fan as it spins.  
This specific fan sends two signals per full rotation.  
However, the system is configured to assume that one signal equals one full rotation.  
Because of this mismatch, when the system counts the signals, it calculates roughly double the real speed.

For example:  
If the fan is actually spinning at about 4100 RPM,  
The system reports around 8200 RPM.
