# sk184292 - ARPING fails in SecureXL UPPAK mode

| Platform | 9000, LightSpeed QLS, 3900, 19000, 29000 |

## Symptoms

- * The `ARPING` command on the security gateway returns this output: *Sent 4 probes* *Received 0 response*
* The ARP and ping commands work normally, and ARP replies are visible in packet captures.
* When SecureXL mode is changed from UPPAK to KPPAK, ARPING works as expected.

## Cause

The ARPING utility does not work in SecureXL UPPAK mode because of a limitation in how ARP traffic is processed and displayed. When the target IP address already exists in the ARP table, UPPAK mode does not show ARPING responses as expected.

Although ARP requests and replies are visible in packet captures and normal traffic is unaffected, the ARPING output remains empty. This issue appeared after migrating to new hardware and upgrading to R81.20 or later, and it persists across multiple Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator takes. Switching SecureXL to KPPAK mode resolves the problem, confirming that the limitation is specific to UPPAK mode.

**Note:**Starting in R82.10, SecureXL supports only UPPAK mode.
