| Property | Value |

| Solution ID | sk183762 |
| Date Created | 2025-08-26 |

| Technical Level | Advanced |
| Products | Endpoint Security |
| Versions | R81.20 |

## Symptoms

- * When configuring email notifications in Harmony Endpoint (version R81.20), the following error appears:
* `Log files contain:
  ``javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Unsupported or unrecognized SSL message`
* `Disabling the SSL Encryption setting results in:
  `*Could not convert socket to TLS; javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: Remote host terminated the handshake*

## Cause

If you enable the **SSL encryption** checkbox, Harmony Endpoint uses **implicit TLS** , which initiates a secure connection immediately.

If disabled and **STARTTLS** is used, it uses **explicit TLS**, which upgrades an existing connection to secure.
