# sk183527 - After upgrading Gaia OS, the content of /var/log/messages file is lost

## Symptoms

- After Gaia OS upgrade, the `/var/log/messages` file becomes empty.

## Cause

During the upgrade process, a new partition is created for the upgraded version, while the `/var/log` partition remains from the previous version. Then a new `messages` file is created, which overwrites the existing one, so the log history is lost.
