## Symptoms

- * After a Windows update, the system prompts for preboot authentication but fails to boot into the operating system and instead loads the automatic recovery environment.
* Recovery media fails to decrypt the drive with error:

  ```
  Recovering C:
  Generic error
  A volume failed to recover
  Reboot to continue
  ```

* The Full Disk Encryption (FDE) Drive Slaving utility fails to access the drive.

## Cause

The system encrypts the drive successfully, but corruption occurs in the area that tracks the encryption progress. This happens when the operating system writes to the same disk sector that is actively being encrypted, causing the encryption process to miss the marker that signals the end of the encryption tables.
