## Symptoms

- To configure Windows Defender when Harmony Endpoint Security Client is installed.

## Solution

**Microsoft Windows Defender** operates in three modes:

* Active
* Passive
* Disabled or Uninstalled

For more information on these modes, see [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/defender-endpoint/microsoft-defender-antivirus-windows?view=o365-worldwide\&viewFallbackFrom=o365-worldwide.](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/defender-endpoint/microsoft-defender-antivirus-windows?view=o365-worldwide&viewFallbackFrom=o365-worldwide.).

For the Harmony Endpoint Security Client Anti-Malware capability to function correctly, Windows Defender must be set to **Passive** or **Disabled/Uninstalled** mode.

For Windows laptops and desktops, the Harmony Endpoint Security Client automatically sets Windows Defender to **Passive** or **Disabled/Uninstalled** mode.

For Windows servers, you must manually set the Windows Defender mode to **Passive** or **Disabled/Uninstalled** mode.
