# sk181269 - RAID is out of sync after a Storage Device was replaced

| Property | Value |
|----------|-------|
| Solution ID | sk181269 |
| Date Created | 2023-07-24 |
| Last Modified | 2023-07-24 |
| Technical Level | Advanced |
| Products | Security Gateway, Security Management Server |
| Versions | R81.20, R81.10 (EOS), R81.20, R81 (EOS), R81.10 (EOS), R81 (EOS) |
| OS | Gaia |

## Symptoms

- * Output of the "`raid_diagnostics`" command showed the RAID status as "`Flags:OUT_OF_SYNC`" for DiskID:1

  Example output:

  `VolumeID:0 RaidLevel: RAID-1 NumberOfDisks:2 RaidSize:931GB State:DEGRADED Flags:VOLUME_INACTIVE A_PHYSICAL_DRIVE_IS_NOT_PROPERLY_CONNECTED`
  `
  DiskID:0 DiskNumber:0 Vendor:ATA ProductID:ST1000NM0033-9ZM Revision:SN04 Size:931GB State:ONLINE Flags:NONE `
  `
  DiskID:1 DiskNumber:1 Vendor:ATA ProductID:ST1000NM000A-2J3 Revision:TN03 Size:931GB State:DISC_FAILED `**Flags:OUT_OF_SYNC**
* The corresponding Storage Device was replaced, but the issue persists.

* Clean Install of the Gaia OS resovled the issue.

## Cause

Administrator performed a "cold swap" of a failed Storage Device (when the appliance was turned off) instead of a "hot swap" (when the appliance is up and running).

1. Connected to the applicance through the console port.
2. Logged in to the Expert mode.
3. Examined the number of storage devices:
   `fdisk -l`
   The output showed two devices.
This means the operating system recognized the two devices.
4. Examine the status of the (multiple device) driver:
   `cat /proc/mdstat`
The output showed only one devices.
This means the RAID did not recognize the second device.
