# sk180497 - "Unknown parameter (param name sim_top_conns_enable)" and "Unknown parameter (param name sim_top_proto_enable)" messages

## Symptoms

- * These error messages appear in */var/log/messages*:

  `
  <Date Time> <kern.alert> Hostname kernel: [fw<N>_0];Global param: operation failed: Unknown parameter (param name sim_top_conns_enable)`

  `
  <Date Time> <kern.alert> Hostname kernel: [fw<N>_0];Global param: operation failed: Unknown parameter (param name sim_top_proto_enable)`
* These kernel parameters are configured explicitly in the *$PPKDIR/conf/simkern.conf* file.

## Cause

The current Security Gateway infrastructure is split between the Firewall and SecureXL modules. When you run the "`fw ctl get int`" command for a kernel parameter (the CPinfo tool runs this command automatically), the Security Gateway runs this command for the Firewall module and for the SecureXL module. If the kernel parameter does not exit in one of these modules, the Security Gateway shows the message "`Global param: operation failed: Unknown parameter`".

Example:

1. Connect to the command line the Security Gateway.

2. Run:

   `fw ctl get int sim_top_conns_enable -a`

   Example output:

   `FW:Get operation failed: failed to get parameter sim_top_conns_enable`  
   `PPAK 0: sim_top_conns_enable = 1`
