## Solution

This process describes a simple procedure to update the firmware and bootloader on the 1600 and 1800 Quantum Spark appliances. The process preserves the configuration of the 1600 and 1800 Security Gateways.

**Before you start:**

1. Prepare a USB flash drive. Make sure it is formatted to FAT32.
2. We recommend you [backup](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/SMB_R80.20.35/AdminGuides/Locally_Managed/EN/Topics/Backup-Restore-Upgrade-and-Other-System-Operatons.htm) your configuration before you upgrade.

**To upgrade:**

1. Download the bootloader file [992000840-vt.bin](https://supportcenter.checkpoint.com/supportcenter/portal/role/supportcenterUser/page/default.psml/media-type/html?action=portlets.DCFileAction&eventSubmit_doGetdcdetails=&fileid=121228) and copy it to the root folder of the USB drive and connect the USB drive to the gateway's USB-A port.

2. Power cycle the gateway and wait a few minutes until the power LED stops flashing blue, and the gateway is finished booting up.

3. Upgrade the firmware on the device to the latest version, currently [R80_992002614_20_35](https://supportcenter.checkpoint.com/supportcenter/portal/role/supportcenterUser/page/default.psml/media-type/html?action=portlets.DCFileAction&eventSubmit_doGetdcdetails=&fileid=121227). To learn how to upgrade the firmware on your gateway, refer to the [R80.20.35 1500, 1600 and 1800 Appliance Series Locally Managed Administration Guide](https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/SMB_R80.20.35/AdminGuides/Locally_Managed/EN/Topics/Backup-Restore-Upgrade-and-Other-System-Operatons.htm).
4. **Optional** - To verify that the bootloader and firmware were upgraded, connect to the gateway via SSH, and run this clish command: `show diag`.

   Validate the software versions:
   * Current image name: *R80_992002614_20_35*
   * Current image version: *614*
   * Bootloader version: *992000840*
   * BDK version: *992000840*

In case the bootloader version or firmware versions are different, repeat the steps as needed. If the problem persists, contact support at [support@checkpoint.com](mailto:support@checkpoint.com)
