# sk175224 - VPN certificates created through Internal Certificate Authority (ICA) have an expiration date sooner than expected

## Symptoms

- * When an administrator creates a new certificate for a user through an Internal Certificate Authority (ICA), the certificate's expiration date is sooner than expected.
* Internal Certificate Authority (ICA) and IPSEC VPN function as expected.
* Restarting the process does not resolve the issue.

## Cause

This is a limitation by design.  

The lifespan of an ICA is limited to 20 years.  

Certificates created by an ICA cannot expire after the end of the ICA's lifespan.
