# sk167976 - A Windows machine is displayed as a Workgroup machine in SmartEndpoint, even though it is actually a "Domain Joined" machine

## Symptoms

- A Windows machine is displayed as a Workgroup machine in SmartEndpoint, even though it is actually a "Domain Joined" machine.

## Cause

The machine is Azure AD Registered, and machines that are joined to Azure AD Registered are not recognized as "Domain Joined" due to the different work algorithm.   

Such machines are "Workplace Joined", and consequently Endpoint Security Client recognizes these machines as Workgroup machines.

## Solution

**Background:**   

* "Domain Joined" is a way to ensure that you can manage Active Directory users and computers centrally. "Domain Joined" conforms to the old client-server model where clients reside on the same network as the servers and this internal network is trusted.
* "Workplace Joined" allows administrators to join personal devices providing two-factor authentication and single sign-on to enterprise network resources and applications.

Azure AD Registered machines are not recognized as "Domain Joined" machines due to the different work algorithm.
