# sk164355 - VPN redundancy does not work when establishing an IPsec VPN Tunnel with a third-party peer

## Symptoms

- VPN redundancy does not work when the user establishes an IPsec VPN Tunnel with a third-party peer. (It works when an IPsec Tunnel is established between Check Point and a Check Point Gateway.)

## Cause

* Check Point uses Multiple Entry Point (MEP) RDP 259 Port (Check Point's proprietary protocol) to check whether the Peer is Alive.
* Third-parties follow the DPD (Dead Peer Detection) mechanism in order to understand the status of the Peer device/link.
