# sk140852 - What is the recommended location for placing custom scripts?

## Solution

Many users are using custom scripts for various purposes. When placing those scripts under the wrong place they might get deleted during an upgrade process.

Check Point's recommendation is to use the Script Repository available in SmartConsole.   
As Check Point Objects, they will survive all upgrades.

Later you can run those scripts on Security Gateways by right-clicking them. You can also run them with the Security Management API referring only to the name of the Script object with the parameter "script".

Additional information

1. Where are these scripts actually stored at and who has access to these? Only the admin who created it?   
   Scripts are stored in internal Management database. The access to the scripts is controlled via permissions profile.  

2. How do these work within SmartTasks?  
   Once the script is uploaded to the repository, it is available for use in SmartTasks. Shell and Python scripts are supported.

**Limitation:**   

The value configured in SmartConsole \> Global properties \> Advanced \> Configure \> Central Device Management \> "device_settings_max_script_length_in_KB" field is not applied.  
**The upper limit is always 8 kilobytes.**
