# sk116146 - "Host or network bits of an IP address cannot be all zeros or all ones" Error when assigning IP address on an interface

## Symptoms

- * When trying to assign an IP address on an interface, the following message is shown: "Host or network bits of an IP address cannot be all zeros or all ones".
* Same message is shown when assigning the address in Gaia Portal or clish.

## Cause

The IP address is the "Network Address" for this range. This is calculated from the provided mask length.

For example: When trying to assign the address 192.168.200.8 and a subnet mask 255.255.255.252. This error message will appear as the range /30 includes all the addresses from 192.168.200.8-192.168.200.11 with 192.168.200.8 being the network address and 192.168.200.11 as the broadcast address. Those addresses cannot be assigned to an interfaces.
