# sk111657 - DNS resolution for external sites takes a long time or fails when using Remote Access VPN and Capsule VPN for Windows 8 and higher

## Symptoms

- When using Endpoint Security VPN/Check Point Mobile/SecureRemote in Windows 8 and above, DNS queries to external sites either fail or take a long time to resolve.

## Cause

In Windows 8, Microsoft introduced a new feature called "*Smart multi-homed name resolution*".

DNS queries are being sent to all adapters in parallel, then take the first answer to arrive. In some cases, rather than taking the first answer, it waits for all answers. If one of the DNS queries will time-out, this means a 10-seconds wait before the DNS is resolved.

**This issue is rooted in the DNS query prioritization of the Windows OS itself and may be experienced with any vendor of VPN Clients. Therefore, it cannot be controlled by Check Point VPN Clients.**
