# sk109104 - Network Adapter card is not detected on Open Server Lenovo / IBM x3650 M5 with one CPU

## Symptoms

- * Network Adapter card is not detected by the Gaia OS / SecurePlatform OS - adapter card does not appear in the output of *lspci -nvv* command.

* */var/log/dmesg* file does not show the loading of driver associated with Network Adapter card.

* Issue occurs even when booting from a Linux LiveCD.

## Cause

This issue is due to an assembly error on the Open Server.

This Open Server has two microprocessor slots. Each of the microprocessors is associated with its own memory slots and its own riser card slot. The riser card allows the server to insert adapter cards.

The documentation specifies that each slot is associated with each microprocessor and cannot be interchangeably used \[*Page 181 of IBM "System x3650 M5 Type 5462 Installation and Service Guide"*\]:

> #### About this task
>
> The server provides two riser-card slots on the same system board. The following  
> information indicates the riser-card slots:
>
> * PCI riser slot 1 (the farther slot from the power supplies). You must install a riser-card assembly in slot 1 with microprocessor 1.
> * PCI riser slot 2 (the closest slot from the power supplies). You must install a riser-card assembly in slot 2 with microprocessor 2.
>
> If the single microprocessor is inserted in slot CPU1, only the adapter cards plugged in riser card 1 will be detected by the system. Similarly, if the single microprocessor is inserted in slot CPU2, only the adapter cards plugged in riser card 2 will be detected by the system.
