# sk106440 - Traffic speed through Security Gateway on SecurePlatform OS significantly drops when using PPPoE connection

## Symptoms

- * Traffic speed through Security Gateway on SecurePlatform OS significantly drops when using PPPoE connection.

* When using PPPoE connection on Security Gateway, CPU utilization (by "pppoe" daemon) increases to almost 100% (as shown in the output of "top" command).

* Changing the Maximum Segment Size (MSS) on Security Gateway (per [sk61221](http://supportcontent.checkpoint.com/solutions?id=sk61221)) does not help.

* Changing Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) of TCP packets does not help.

* Traffic speed through Security Gateway on SecurePlatform OS is as expected when using Ethernet connection.

## Cause

SecurePlatform OS is based on Red Hat Eneterprise Linux 3 and contains a relatively old PPPoE package. Since it was developed a while ago, it does not support high traffic rates.
