# sk105489 - Administrator is able to configure auto-negotiation for 1GB / 10GB interfaces in Gaia OS

## Symptoms

- Administrator is able to configure auto-negotiation for fiber 1GB / 10GB interfaces in Gaia OS (although these standards do not negotiate the mode per IEEE 802.3).

## Cause

"Auto negotiation" is defined as a separate feature from "speed/duplex" pair, and, theoretically, it is possible to configure 1000/10000 speed *and* to configure the auto negotiation mode.

Attempts to set auto negotiation to "off" when 1000/10000 speed is configured are blocked by the configuration software (e.g., *ethtool*). In addition, by design, error messages from auto negotiation IOCTLs cannot be caught. As a result, there is minimal to no impact on working cycle of the NIC from trying to set "wrong" configuration.

For the above reasons, in its current design, Gaia OS does not restrict the configuration of auto-negotiation (neither in Gaia Portal, nor in Gaia Clish) - administrator can set the "auto-negotiation" to "on" or "off", but in reality, the NIC with 1000/10000 speed will always continue working with auto-negotiation set to "on".
