# sk104839 - 'evs_backup' command sometimes fails with "Failed to start postgres service"

## Symptoms

- * *evs_backup* command sometimes fails with the following messages:

  ```
  
  Postgres service is down, starting postgres
  Failed to start postgres service. Please check backup.err for detailed errors
  eva_db_backup.csh fail
  error has occurred. evs_backup will stop
  ```

* *backup.err* file contains the following:

  ```
  
  pg_dump: [archiver (db)] connection to database "events_db" failed: FATAL:  the database system is starting up
  pg_dump: *** aborted because of error
  ```

## Cause

The *$RTDIR/bin/eva_db_backup.csh* script needs the *postgres* process to be running, so it starts it it is not running.

Starting the database can take some time (several seconds).
