# sk101484 - CPD crashed/terminated without a Core Dump or the process is consuming high CPU utilization (>90%)

## Symptoms

- * CPD is consuming high CPU utilization (\>90%) on the Security Gateway or Management Server / CMA   
  Note: In some cases, the CPD may not crash - in part of the cases it will be restarted by a watchdog.
* SIC communication and policy installation are failing on the gateway.
* Running cpstop and cpstart, and/or rebooting the system does not resolve the problem.
* CPD is crashing and cpwd.elg shows:

  ```
  
  [ERROR] Process CPD terminated abnormally : Unhandled signal 11 (SIGSEGV). Core dumped. 
  [ERROR] Failed to register new process file_name:CPD_XXX_XXX.mntr
  ```

* In some scenarios cpwd.elg shows repeatedly:

  ```
  
  [ERROR] CPD (pid_of_cpd) did not send keep-alive message for x number of times
  ```

## Cause

The high CPU utilization of the CPD daemon is caused by an endless I/O read loop on the CPEPS table handler. The tables in $CPDIR/database/cpeps contain the gateway's status history. It appears that the CPEPS database got corrupted.
